Editorial: The good old days for education

These may well be the good old days for Bend-La Pine Schools. Retirement costs are set to devour more and more of the district’s budget. Dream of smaller class sizes? Better graduation rates? Worry instead about cutting teachers and staff, pay cuts or fewer school days.

Retirement costs for school districts across the state are shooting skyward. The projected average rate for retirement costs for districts will go from 14 percent of payroll to 20 percent for the 2019-21 biennium.
