Editorial: The state should not pick up ballot postage

Oregon is having a hard enough time filling a $1.4 billion shortfall in its budget. That should be reason enough to persuade lawmakers to defeat Senate Bill 683, which would require the state to pay for return postage on every ballot mailed in every election in Oregon.

A public hearing on the measure will be held Tuesday. It’s difficult to tell just what the measure would cost, according to the Legislative Fiscal Office, which gives lawmakers estimates on bills that would require spending by the state.
