Lightning fires good practice for what’s ahead

A second straight early-season lightning storm skirted the Rogue Valley on Monday as wildland firefighting crews prepped for nature’s opening salvos on this summer’s wildfire season.

Hundreds of ground strikes logged Sunday by the National Weather Service in Jackson and Josephine counties were supposed to be followed Monday by another aerial light show, but that storm skirted largely to the east, authorities said.
