Guest column: Oregon is not Michigan; don’t support HB 3078

On June 21, The Bulletin ran a guest column by Sheriff Jerry Clayton of Washtenaw County, Michigan. He suggested Oregon legislators adopt House Bill 3078, which cuts sentences for repeat ID thieves and theft over $1,000 by almost 30 percent and increases early release for a range of property and violent offenders by 25 percent.

He concludes by suggesting Oregon model itself after states such as Michigan, Georgia and South Carolina. The rationale for adopting this substantial cut for the most egregious repeat property offenders is that reduced prison sentences will somehow increase safety in Oregon.
