Legislation would require greater safety measures for dams

Dams in Umatilla County already follow regulations.

Several dams in Oregon will have to make safety upgrades that could potentially prevent loss of life in a disaster, though the four “high-hazard” dams in Umatilla and Morrow counties are already in compliance with those safety requirements and won’t see any major changes.

Rep. Richard Lewis (R-Silverton) introduced the legislation passed Friday that will require owners and operators of “high-hazard dams” to develop an emergency action plan if they don’t already have one and conduct annual exercises and inspections of the facilities.
