Editorial: Forests burn as Congress ponders funding

The smoke and haze filling the mid-valley this week serve as a reminder that it’s been some time since we’ve checked in on that proposal before Congress to change the way we pay for firefighting.

As you might recall, this has been an issue for years: As fire seasons across the nation start earlier and last longer and the intensity of the fires grows, so do the costs of firefighting. Frequently, that means agencies such as the U.S. Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management find that the money they have budgeted to fight fires runs out long before the end of the fire season.
