The connection between suicides and mass shootings — and a way to reduce both

Maryland is among 13 states where “red flag” laws can remove guns from someone who is acting suicidal — saving lives and maybe even preventing mass shootings.

Thousand Oaks, Pittsburgh, Parkland, Las Vegas, Orlando — they’re part of our annual parade of horror.

How can we begin to stop this?

Maybe it’s time to start looking at a far more frequent, blood-soaked American epidemic: suicide.

The majority — about two-thirds — of our nation’s gun deaths are people committing suicide.

It happens around 60 times a day in America.
