Oregon’s Indigenous students juggle tribal ties, future plans

Two years ago, Oregon created a grant program that covers tuition and living expenses for members of Oregon’s federally recognized tribes who attend any of the state’s universities or community colleges.

But education leaders, students and mentors say the reputation of U.S. colleges and universities as failing to honor Indigenous cultures, along with the concerns that tribal students won’t return home after earning a degree, can pose challenges to Indigenous students’ enrollment in higher education. Some students also worry about their safety or sense of belonging.
