Portland mail handling site will close, lay off 62

A California contractor that provides trucking and mail handling services for the U.S. Postal Service said Friday that it will shut down its site near Portland International Airport and lay off all 62 people who work there. The workers will lose their jobs on Jan. 31, according to a notice sent to regional government agencies.

Matheson Flight Extenders has lost a succession of contracts with the postal service and filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy last year. In August it announced plans to lay off 1,000 workers in three other states and last month reported another 450 will lose their jobs when it closes two sites in California.
