Selective Indigenous camas cultivation goes back 3,500 years, OSU study finds

Camas, a wildflower prevalent across the northern and western United States and Canada, has been selectively harvested by Indigenous communities for 3,500 years, a recent study by Oregon State University has found.

Wild camas is found throughout the Pacific Northwest, but Oregon is home to more than 65% of the native species. The underground bulb of this iconic purple wildflower has been a dietary staple for Indigenous communities in the region for over 8,000 years.
